It's 7pm. My baby is sleeping. My husband is out of town. The night is ahead of me. What to do? What to do? Thought to myself that I'd sit down and catch up on some blog posts. We've had some fun adventures lately and Scarlett has new tricks to show off. Unfortch, I come to find that my wireless is down. I think it's from the earthquake early Sunday morning. Since the hubs is gone there is no chance it will be working again until he gets back tomorrow. I have no interest in trying to fix it myself, it will only lead to unnecessary frustration. Well, I know I have a to do list a mile long....hhhhmmm, what should I do tonight?
Things I could do...
clean two bathtubs and two toilets
go through an enormous stack of mail and bills
wash a couple loads of laundry
sell one of my kidneys to fund Scarletts childcare
a thousand crunches and butt exercises
Things I'm actually going to do...
eat left over lasagna
pretend loading the dishwasher counts as cleaning my apartment
drink a glass of wine
read my book club book 'cutting for stone'
fall asleep happy
Hope your night is filled with some options as good and as unproductive as mine!
{thank goodness for iPhone Internet and mobile blog updates, right?}
Goodnight!

black is the new black
my sister, as only a sister can say: um, i don't mean to be rude, but you kinda dress goth now
me: what?! I thought i was dressing classic and chic!
well, i don't have the black swan eye make-up {we all know its a fancy day when i put on mascara} but, it is true that my new colors are black and black. the new style has trifold functionality. one part covering 10 extra post baby pounds. one part ease of not having to decide what clothes will match. black matches with everything! and one part having a neuroses about not clashing with Scarlett. call me crazy, but i just don't like when she is wearing pastel floral and i am wearing navy blue stripes. what? i would never dress her in pastel floral and i don't even own navy blue stripes.
point being, i'm loving my new all black wardrobe and i don't think its overly dark. its easy, slimming, classy and i somehow look a little dressier while still basically wearing the comfort equivalent of yoga pants and a zip-up. i previously thought buying plain black was boring, but now my tune has changed to you can never have too many black sweaters! match with some leggings or dark denim and, boom, its an outfit! add some accessories and colorful flats to spice it up, or stay simple and understated. either way, for the post prego mamma, black is the new black.
i'm emulating my bestie by using a polyvore page to show you some of my fave staples.
though my sister has traditionally been the more stylish one of us two, i'm gonna disagree that it's goth. classic and chic, right? what do you think of the new look? any staples for the post prego mamma that are must haves for you?

lazy sunday
honesty corner: i didn't even leave the house today.
but, it doesn't matter, we had the best lazy sunday! we just hung out and played all day. no errands to run, chores to do, appointments to get to, etc, etc. no obligations of any sort. and i honestly had so much fun doing nothing but playing with Scarlett. we read tons of books, played with new blocks, and did lots of airplanes and pattycakes. and, of course, i did everything i could to get as much laughter and smiles as possible out of the little biscuit.
here are Scarlett's squealing giggles from belly kisses and tickles.
i hope you all had a perfect lazy sunday too!

home is wherever i'm with you
this girl's gonna make her daddy a million dollars. and they deserve it. father/daughter duo rendition of edward sharpe's home. just watch.
"someday i'm gonna whistle?" beyond adorbs.
fyi, this song was on our bringing baby home from the hospital mix tape. home is wherever i'm with you. love. love.
RSV prevention
RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) seems to be everywhere! i'm a nurse in a pediatric intensive care unit, so listen up!
rsv can just be a common and mild cold for you or i, but itty bitties can get really sick. our unit has more than a few babies and children admitted with rsv right now. my friend's nephew is hospitalized for rsv. i have a co-worker whose newborn is hospitalized with it too. there seems to be a wave of cases right now. which is not surprising considering the holidays just passing. lots of snot nosed cousins playing together in tight quarters fighting over new toys.
in most babies, kids and adults your body will clear up the infection on its own. sometimes, though, babies and small children have trouble fighting the infection and begin to have too much trouble breathing, staying hydrated, etc so they need to be in the hospital for supportive care. rsv is a virus so it cannot be treated with antibiotics. i don't want too scare you too much, but i have see babies die from rsv infections, so this can be serious. the best treatment is prevention!
just be aware. even if you don't have a baby, you could pass it on to someone who then passes it on to someone else with a baby or someone with a decreased immune system. let's all protect ourselves and each other from getting sick!

be safe and smart
- wash your hands
- wash your hands
- wash your hands
- frequently! like to the point of feeling ocd
- cough/sneeze into your elbow, not your hands
- know that kissing your baby can transmit the virus
- if your baby seems sick, keep them home from daycare, playdates, etc.
- keep your baby away from young kids who have snot running down their noses and are coughing!
- call your pediatrician if your baby has trouble breathing, fast breathing or shortness of breath, a barky-like cough, seems overly lethargic or not him/herself, difficulty feeding, or a fever

top hundred names of 2010
just looked at the list with a little nervous energy, hoping that i wouldn't see Scarlett. scrolling down, i began feeling a sense of pride that Scarlett was such a unique and...and then...there it was. number 88. honestly, i was a little disappointed. you feel me, right? not because i don't loooove some of the names listed, espesh some of the boys' top choices, but more because i thought we picked something a little more uncommon. i'd rather not have five other kids in her class with the same name. c'mon, anyone in my age range and demographic knows a gazillion katies! by the way, hi katie g, kate b, katie k, kate m, kait z....
what about you? is your baby's name on the list? how do you feel about it either way? was it a factor in making your decision? or will it be with subsequent babes?

new year = expensive year
we all know babies are expensive. but, like, how much are we really talking? you may or may not want to use this baby cost calculator to find out.
in her first year of life
Scarlett Maeve will cost approximately
$17,453
the calculator has included everything from big expenses like six months of childcare and the hundo a month i'm supposedly putting in her college fund to small items like pacifiers and butt paste. it even has guestimates preset for you on common baby costs, and details monthly spending on diapers and food. unfortunately, it doens't include my daily trip to whole foods for who knows what i buy there everyday or my ritualistic latte from starbucks, but i guess its not calculating mamma's bad habits.
of course, we all know a baby's worth is immeasurable, but how much will your baby cost?
